Gakuen Alice, Vol. 1

Author: Tachibana Higuchi
Genre: Manga
Rating: 5/5

I stumbled on Gakuen Alice or Alice Academy in Animax. As a kid I loved the series but to my utter astonishment there was only one series. I waited and waited, hoping beyond hope that they will make the second series. After all they left with such a bittersweet cliffhanger. That is when I learned about the manga. Gakuen Alice, Vol 1 contains first five chapters. Mikan is introduced as an extremely cheerful, dedicated and naive girl. Her complete opposite is her best friend Hotaru. She is quiet, intelligent and mean but she is not heartless. Repeatedly she is shown as a girl with a soft spot who loves Mikan in her own way. The characteristics of characters were pretty typical with bad boy and gullible boy, smart but ignored kid, bitchy nemesis, etc. However, at the same time there is an element of mystery and a conflicting spirit of happiness which hooks you to the series. No matter how much you know about a character there is a chance that there is something still there, something unknown to us and hence you keep reading on and on.
